Met Gala’s avant-garde theme of the night had the A listers channeling the experimentally unorthodox spirit of Rei Kawakubo, the honoured Comme des Garçons designer of whom an exhibition entitled Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between is paid tribute to. A bald Cara Delevingne with her futuristic scalp, Jaden Smith alongside his shorn dreadlocks as the accessories du jour and Celine Dion’s glittering Met debut — here are all the out-of-this-world Met Gala 2017 looks you need to see.
Outrageously Kawakubo: Rihanna in Comme des Garçons
Of course RiRi had to make another meme-worthy entrance. This time, she ditched the yellow and stood true to her dominance as a fashion icon in an ingeniously Kawakubo CDG number.
Outrageously dystopian: Katy Perry in Maison Margiela Artisanal
After appearing on the cover of American Vogue wearing one of Kawakubo’s bests, the gala co-chair took a turn for Galliano’s equally high-drama flair.
Outrageously restrictive: Pharell Williams and Helen Lasichanh in Comme des Garçons
Sacrificing her arms for the night, Mrs. Williams donned one of CDG’s latest Fall 2017 “future silhouettes”. Well, she’d have to make do with Pharell in place of her yet-to-exist spoon-feeding robot.
Outrageously… well, outrageous: Jaden Smith in Louis Vuitton
Always pushing the boundaries and breaking the mould, Smith junior sports his father’s signature Will Smith-cut with dreadlocks in hand as an accessorial plus-one. Not to mention he was wearing a pair of heeled patent boots for extra height. A tad too much, maybe?
Outrageously on trend: Solange Knowles in Thom Browne
Yes, puffer jackets are the thing of the season — but Solange took it up a notch with her trailing puffy train.
Outrageously slinky and sizzling: Bella Hadid in Alexander Wang
If chances of bumping into your ex and his new flame (meaning: The Weeknd and Selena Gomez) at the event of the year are painstakingly high, take it from Bella: wear a skintight catsuit and serve revenge hot as hell.
Outrageously extraterrestrial: Cara Delevingne in Chanel
Having recently had her monumental mane cut off short, then completely bald, for her upcoming movie Life in a Year, Delevingne did not let her hairless situation stop her from making a statement.
Outrageously textural: Anna Cleveland in Comme des Garçons
The model, who famously twirled while closing Comme des Garçons’ runway last season, was now bestowed the pivotal task of rocking Kawakubo’s genius ruffled white co-ords. A job impeccably done, if we do say so ourselves.
Outrageously worth the wait: Celine Dion in Versace
Her first at Met Gala, Celine Dion does not disappoint — and definitely not in her high-slit, barely-there Versace dress.
Outrageously western: Priyanka Chopra in Ralph Lauren
Who would’ve thought a trench coat could make an appearance on an avant-garde red carpet night? That’s because no one thought of a trench coat could cascade with a pond-resembling train till Priyanka made it legitimately classic-meets-OTT.
