It’s practically unheard of for fellow fashion houses to team up for a collab collection. Sure, a handful of recent collabs may come to mind: the just-announced J.W. Anderson x Uniqlo, the sportily cultish Alexander Wang x Adidas, or maybe the mother-daughter chic Victoria Beckham x Target—but it’s safe to say they all apply the typical designer x fast-fashion brand/active-wear/retailer models. What about designer x designer? Here’s where the Coach & Rodarte collection makes their ineffably bold entrance.
Set to hit Coach boutiques (unfortunately, not Singapore’s) and online (thank heavens!) on 14 April, the collection is a romantic mix of Coach’s no-frills New York roots and Rodarte’s cool Los Angeles DNA. The unlikely fashion camaraderie focalises on an ingeniously ahead-of-its-time meta ‘70s Coach advertisement that spells “This is a Coach Bag”, printing glove tanned leather bags to sweatdresses with the ad. Embellishments—you know, the Rodarte standard: chunky pearls, glam-rock sequins, and heavy-duty appliquès—are intricately scattered on clutches to biker jackets. Ethereally contemporary, each piece embodies the best of both, well, Coach and Rodarte worlds.
“Rodarte’s conceptual approach to American style was the perfect lens to reimagine nostalgic Coach pieces,” gushed Coach’s Stuart Vevers on the Mulleavys’ design approach. The admiration is evidently mutual: “We love how Coach believes in American luxury and craftsmanship. We also love their incredible archive and the imaging of the brand over the years,” said Rodarte’s sister duo Kate and Laura Mulleavy.
The Coach & Rodarte collection will be available online starting from Friday, 14 April 2017.
