The cruise season has taken up a norm of flying off show guests to exotic, unexpected places far and away — the exact places behind the collections’ inspirations — but Dior took the off-beaten track by opting for Los Angeles, the city of angels. But steering away from the Hollywood sign, the Malibu mountains were the chosen backdrop for artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri’s first cruise show for the maison.

Whisked away in ATVs up the desert-like wilderness of the Santa Monica mountains, guests were welcomed into a cozy space made up of tents, pillows and stone with a backdrop of the setting sun, and of course, the unmissable Dior Sauvage (French for wild) sign and hot air balloons ready to take flight.

A southwestern dream, the collection paid homage to artist Georgia O’Keefe’s shirt-dress-heavy monochrome wardrobe. References included Chiuri’s favourite book, Women Who Run With Wolves, Christian Dior’s use of rock paintings by Georges Bataille and the relationship between woman and nature. Picture this: fringe, ponchos, flat top hats and a lot of embroidered patchwork — creating an image of a fiercely sensual woman. How fitting, considering ‘bad gal Riri’ and a trope of fellow leading ladies the likes of actresses Charlize Theron, Demi Moore, Brie Larson to model, Kiko Mizuhara were in front row attendance. Singer, Solange Knowles too performed at the after-party. Strong women indeed.
