Blazing his own path outside the conventional fashion framework has now become Maison Martin Margiela’s norm. Through techniques of deconstruction and transformation, his collections reinvent volumes, modify shapes, change the original use and movement of garments, and derail classic notions of what fashion should be. Since its inception 23 years ago, Margiela has produced a number of iconic pieces over the seasons. And for the first time – the first of many firsts in the Maison’s history – the most representative pieces of what the house stands for will be reproduced in updated shapes and materials and offered to the broad public in an exclusive collaboration with H&M.

Come November 15th 2012, followers of the Maison around the globe will be rising early in attempt to acquire a piece of the house’s history. The man himself speaks. ‘We are very happy to present Maison Martin Margiela (MMM) pieces with H&M, offering a new interpretation of our vision. The democracy of our fashion has always been at the centre of our creativity, and the collaboration with H&M allows us to push this instinct further. We will bring together the contrasting universes of the two houses in ways that will surprise all.’

Aesthetically, what you can be expecting is an overview that covers all bases of Margiela’s creative approach to garments. Traditional finishings and tailoring procedures will be visible, in an inside-out sartorial concept representative of the world of couture being exposed. Masculine shapes will be adjusted to frame the female physique, and what is fitting will be oversized, like pea coats, jeans, jewellery. Ambiguity is also a strong favourite of Margiela’s resulting in a trompe l’oeil day dress, bodysuit with an integrated bra, and my favourite – the invisible wedge pump.

Looking through each piece of the MMM X H&M collection, I’d say that this one isn’t for everyone. Unlike previous collaborations, what Margiela offers isn’t mass-market appeal, or conforms to what society defines as desirable; it never has, staying true to the house’s signature. It takes a certain – no scratch that – a helluva lot of pizazz to carry off that Duvet coat like you own it.

So if you’ve got it in you, rise early and blaze yourself a path come the 15th! 😉
