Cats, Cuts & Colours

If you haven’t checked out Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2014 ad campaign, it’s high time you did.

Starring It of all current It girls is Lupita Nyong’o, winner of this year’s Best Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar award. Fresh faces they’ve got on the bandwagon is Elizabeth Olsen, younger sister of Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, Australian-born Bella Heathcote and the ever-effervescent Elle Fanning.

The advertising short is super fun, an entire sequence of split-second cuts featuring stylistic cat and floral graphics, the models having fun, Miu Miu’s latest bags in muted but beautiful pastel shades – more on that in a second – and just an explosion of colour over the entire mise en scene.

This season’s bags are muted in terms of colour palette, compared to bolder sister-label Prada, but that’s exactly what I appreciate about Miu Miu; sweet, understated and classy with a little quirk.
(Measuring 32 x 19 by 3cm, the shoulder bag retails for SGD2870)

Available in colours like dusty pink, blue, mustard yellow, off-white and light brown, the soft calf leather bags share the same silhouette and cut as the Spring/Summer 2014 runway styles, but given slight tweaks for a day-bag that’s easy to carry and match.

I’d say that if you’re looking for a bag that pulls out all the stops, with all the bells and whistles, you’re better off with a Prada. But if you’re looking for a bag that lasts the long haul, matches practically everything, that will still stay classy and updated even the season after next, and appreciate understated, well-made luxury, I’d keep a finger on this one.
