The awards season led to its height with the Oscars last Sunday, and if the anticipation crescendo leading to the event was anything to go by, we should know the red carpet would be an ultimate Hollywood glam bang. Heads were turned, lights were flashed and all kinds of statements were made.

Ever the winner, Emma Stone (Best Actress Winner, La La Land) glowed in custom Givenchy, which might very well have been one of Riccardo Tisci’s final designs for the storied house. Other fun fact: If you have a keen eye, you’d notice the sneaky golden Planned Parenthood badge pinned on her chest. Meanwhile, Dakota Johnson tucked the exact same badge on her clutch while channelling a screen siren of ’50s yore in her buttery silk Gucci number. Leading lady Ruth Negga (Best Actress Nominee, Loving) and model Karlie Kloss, too, sported their cause in the form of the American Civil Liberties Union’s blue ribbon on an intricate red Valentino gown and a sleek minimal Stella McCartney dress, respectively.

Not limited to just political, chic sartorial statements flourished tremendously as well. The Mummy‘s Sofia Boutella summoned all eyes on her in silver Chanel Haute Couture of which sparkles as much as it sweeps. Going for understated elegance, Moonlight’s Naomie Harris donned a little white dress by Raf Simons for Calvin Klein by Appointment, while Hidden Figures’ Taraji P. Henson went chicly dark in a sweetheart-neckline Alberta Ferreti. Here, take a look at the top 10 red carpet looks from the 89th Academy Awards.
