I must admit. When I first set my eyes on the runway for Prada Spring Summer 2013 a few months ago, I was quite taken a back. Mind you I was watching the show live on the Prada website and not in person. It was… shall I say a rather bizarre spectacle. Perhaps one I’m not use to and have never seen before. It was something new. Something I’m not acquainted with… which is after all not necessarily a bad thing. Having recently seen (and touch) some of these pieces in person at the Singapore press office, I’ve finally come to an understanding and appreciation of the inspiration behind this collection.
Miuccia Prada has created something totally original. She was channeling Japan’s fashion culture of weirdly cute and at the same time proposing an innovative way of dressing up in the collection. Giving it an almost futuristic spin with the use metallic feet covers and tabi socks, it is as if the virtual avatars of yester-season had blossomed into these space-age flower power geishas of Spring Summer 2013.
But unlike the geishas we see trodding the streets of Kyoto today and in the past, these ‘fashion geishas’ come from a more mode existence with a very distinctive sensual appeal. There is just that right amount of eccentricity that leaves you room for creativity when it comes to your own personal styling.
To sum it up, this is one collection that is not necessarily out of this world… but unusually chic and elegantly quirky the Italian meets Japanese way to high fashion.
